Screws into drywall

I am in Bend, Oregon w, my DIL and just painted her kitchen. Now I want to put up the window toppers/valances I made. I have lightweight cafe rods with screws. This is wallboard I am sure since the house is new, 5 yrs old. Do I simply screw the hardware screws into the walls or should I get some of those plastic gizmos and make a hole and pound those into wall to hold the screws? My sons electric screw driver/drill is soooo heavy.
