Windows is shutting down forever

Hi all, Sometimes when I shut down my computer it gets stuck on the "windows is shutting down" screen and the only way I can get out is by unplugging it, and since this is a laptop, taking out the battery. This is probably not good, am I right? And what can I do when this happens?
