Weeping Cherry Tree

I have a three year old weeping cherry tree that overnight had most of its leaves turn black. I haven't mulched or changed watering habits, so I'm perplexed and heart-broken. Anyone know what's up and if it is still alive?

If it's completely defoliated I would say your chances are not good. Sounds like a problem at the roots, a fungal disease or a combination of both. Check the base of of the trunk at soil level. Look for bore holes and sawdust that would indicate borers. Also check for lawnmower damage to to the trunk. Open wounds are an invitation to disease. The prunus family are susceptable to a whole host of diseases. One last thing, cherries do not do well in poorly drained soil.

It's unlikely your tree will ever fully recover so I wouldn't waste alot of time with sprays, fertilizers etc.
If you do decide to plant another one, I would plant in a different location.
