Autumn Clematis

South Kingstown, RI(Zone 5b)

I finally discovered that the beautiful vine growing along the wall of our outdoor shower is called "Autumn Clematis" and indeed it does have the most wonderfu white flowers (in Rhode Island) from August through November. The problem is that none of the websites I've visited recognize that name. Does any know the real name of this vine as I'd like to plant more on the other side. Many thanks!

Sounds to me like you are talking about "Sweet Autumn Clematis" aka Terniflora...Jeanne

According to my Clematis bible, "An Illustrated Encyclopedia of Clematis" there was a mix up on naming the 'Sweet Autumn" and the "Piniculata". I have not learned enough to make the clarification. I do have a lovely speciman in my yard that provides amazing aroma, a plethora of white flowers..coverd with bees in the late summer and early fall. Can't miss with this hearty grower; just give it a fence and half a day of sun.

I must be doing something wrong, then because I've managed to kill two of these plants!!! I see them on people's deck rails and fences, and they are so beautiful. Not in my yard! I bought two more last fall, and will try again!

This clematis is an invasive here in Alabama. I have one growing up to the top of a 100 year old pecan
tree. the vine has killed roses, a dogwood tree, and several camellias. This year Im gonna get it!
Wisteria does the same thing, but I have not been successful in confining it either.

I agree gloria125. It's very invasive here in Maryland too! Haven't been able to get rid of it yet.

Autumn Clematis: It is like a beautiful woman with bad intentions!

Too cute! I've never heard it explained in those terms....

I was going to put this on a fence at the bottom of our property - I would like something to cover the fence. Has anyone in southwest grown this? I don't want to create a problem. I read in the plant files comments if you shear it after blooming, it won't set seed. I've ordered seed, so it won't be a great loss if I have to give up the idea.
