MDBs require substantial winter freeze in order to bloom well. They are incredibly hardy little gems that are the earliest (and shortest) of the beardeds to bloom in the spring. They can perform beautifully with less direct sun than their taller counterparts, and their tiny rzs are not terribly attractive to iris borers.

I received this from my neighbor when I was about 13 years old. I'm 46 now, and it is still a fovorite. At bloom stage it is 4 inches tall, with foliage reaching 6 inches later. Name unknown, here it is just opening:
