Dying With Tea or Rit

I have pair of vintage hand-crocheted window valances in good condition but color is uneven. I've never used tea as a color fixative (nor have I ever used Rit). Does anyone know techniques for using either on fabrics? Or..should I be asking this question in Crafts?
