A centipede or what?

Mysore, India(Zone 10a)

This is very common in our office campus with plenty of vegetation. They are often found crossing roads. The one here looks dead. It is hardish. Can curl up into a spiral when in danger like most of the species do. Jut wondering what they are and what they do in nature.

I think it's a Rusty millipede, Trigoniulus corallinus. They curl up to protect their legs. Apparently they can exude a small amount of a poisonous gas to avoid being eaten! They eat decaying vegetation - 'detritivorous'.

The varieties of millipedes that do secrete poisonous gas secrete hydrogen cyanide. A good chemical to use to avoid being eaten!

wow- I learned a new word today..., now how to start a conversation that will use detritivorous?

Something like what the tadpoles and snails do in the ponds?
