Tree Swallow - Tachycineta bicolor

Frederick, MD(Zone 6a)

One of our favorite birds here; their flight is one of swooping and they are particularly active in the early evenings in late spring and summer. They're great eaters of mosquitos and their song is a combination of whistles and twitters.

That is a wonderful shot Dea! Isn't it great when the wildlife eat the biting insects. I love the metallic green sheen it has.

How many types of Swallows are there? I know of Tree and Barn swallows; any others?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6a)

Yes, there are many different species. They're kind of grouped together as passerine birds in the family Hirundinidae. They are all "aerial" feeders even though many of them feed on various berries also.

There's a good definition here in Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hirundinidae

Boy, am I ever learning here :)

Worldwide, 83 species, most of them in tropical regions. North America has 8; Europe has 5.
