Kabocha squash

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9b)

Which of these cultivars is this Kabocha squash that's in my grocery store now?

I did google searches of all the cultivars, but didn't see many picts of them enough to make an informed decision. "Cha-Cha" looked close though....Or is it the "Special Export"?

I would hesitate to say, but check here:

and take your pick. Your squash looks like at least two of the ones pictured in the Kitazawa Seed Catalog.

Here are some more kabocha pictures from Evergreen seed. As you can see, kabochas can look a lot alike.

X- there are dozens of cultivars of Kabocha squash. Commercial producers in the USA list Delica, Kurinishiki F1, Honey Delight, Sweet Mama. Acreage is small however, so grocery store squash may well be imports. Color and shape is about all one can deterimine from the picture. Size, color of flesh and size of blossom scar will also be useful in narrowing your search. Actually Kabocha is simply the Japanese word for squash, but is used for C. Maxima of the Buttercup type in general usage in this country.

I found this picture of 'Sweet Mama' which looks the most like mine. Same color pattern and shape,.

It is grown for the supermarket trade, so Sweet Mama is quite possible.
