There was a great thread going on the rose forum about growing clematis with roses. I was looking for a suggestion from clematis growers about which clematis to grow with a particlar rose that I have ordered for this spring. the rose can get to 10 foot tall, but probably more like 6 or 7 foot in my zone and I thought a clem would be great to add to the rose as the rose is a once bloomer in the spring. So I will try to add the link to see a pic of the rose. I might succeed!!

Didn't know where to post this
Hi venu209,
What a beautiful Rose! Which Clematis are you considering growing with this Rose? Are you looking for a Group 2 Clematis (flowers early to mid-Summer) or Group 3 Clematis (flowers late Summer to early Fall)?
Well, that's where I thought clematis growers with first hand experience could help. The colors in pictures are sometimes deceiving. I originally thought Niobe and Arctic Queen but I have a feeling the Niobe would be too strong a red if it blooms with the rose. But if I went with a late bloomer, the color wouldn''t matter that much since the rose would be done blooming. ??
venu: You're right. I think Niobe's color would be to strong for your Rose. I would choose a complementary color to bloom at the same time. Trying to match the color of your Rose would be very difficult and I would worry that the colors may clash.
It sounds like you would like the Clematis to flower in early to mid Summer. If you are asking me for my personal recommendations, I would go with a single blooming Clematis, because your Rose is very intricate, multiple colors , many layers of petals and you want your Rose to take 'center stage'. I wouldn't want to use a Clematis that would try and compete with your Rose, but would rather act as the 'supporting cast'....very subtle, but with beautiful elegance. I love 'Huldine' (Group 3) which blooms in July, August, & Sept. "Pearly white flowers with a purple-violet stripe on the reverse which shows through as a pink bar. Yellow anthers. " (copied from Clematis On The Web) http://www.clematis.hull.ac.uk/new-clemdetail.cfm?dbkey=20 Hopefully, Huldine's blooms would coincide in July & August. 'Henryi' ( Group 2) http://www.clematis.hull.ac.uk/new-clemdetail.cfm?dbkey=206 or 'Miss Bateman' http://www.clematis.hull.ac.uk/new-clemdetail.cfm?dbkey=293 . Again, you'll notice that I picked understated flowers. I tried to pick up the color of your Rose through the anthers or reverse side of the bloom. If you like the color pink, you again have different possibilities. How about 'Pink Fantasy' (Group 3) http://www.clematis.hull.ac.uk/new-clemdetail.cfm?dbkey=375 , or 'Pink Champagne' - 'Kakio'http (Group 2) ://www.clematis.hull.ac.uk/new-clemdetail.cfm?dbkey=611
I hope this helps. Have fun combining shapes & colors of Clematis to grow through your Rose. I'm sure you'll pick just the right ones.
Oooooh, thanks for the suggestions, Shirley. I really like Miss Bateman. I just peeked again, and I really, really like Miss Bateman. Thanks!!
You're very welcome! 'Miss Bateman' should be easy to find at local nurseries (in the Spring) or on-line.
