I thought I'd start a thread with links to photos of cottage gardens. To start off with here is a link to the beautiful garden of two of Dave's Garden members:

I loved the potting shed photo from Gingerbread Village. Maybe I will have to try talking my brother into another building project.

I have never been on this forum before but it is nice. I had a cottage garden with my x and it nicely reseeds itself every year. It was started in 1994 and 95. It is my pride and joy still. I go over and steal seed heads all the time, plus I intend on asking him if I can pull up the bulbs and divide the scabs and take them. As long as his girlfriend is not there, he will say yes, I imagine. Now I have a big 5/8 acre lot ajacent to vacant 5 acres of desert where rabbits and gophers graze freely. Every step forward is 2 steps back, so Hard scape it is for this fall and yet another fall wasted for planting.

Fantastic links lincoliness, you've been very busy.

Here, I spent the day being sick as a dog, not attending the wedding as planned but trying to keep my head above the water line. Meanwhile, friend David dug out my first bed, laid the cardboard and newspaper, spread grass clippings, pine straw, fruit and veggie kitchen scraps, composted steer manure and soil (new, not the old junk). He took only one picture, at the end of the day, nothing before or during.

Today, we have to back track somewhat because with my being so ill, he forgot about the curbing that was supposed to go in right after the digging. I think it will be ok, we can just pull the soil back from the edges and make the curbs. Once it's hardened, then replace the soil. At least that's what I'm hoping.

So, here's the one pic from yesterday. He placed my little reading child in the midst of the soil just for fun, not knowing where I had intended it to live. OOps just found he took two pics so both will follow.

Hope you're feeling better Jude. Looks like a great start. Nice black soil. The bed shape reminds be of a bow tie. I sometimes refer to my beds by their shape. I have a kidney shaped one and a heart shaped one. I was thinking about you tonight and looking at gardening in Arizonia sites. It does look like there are lots of possibilies for flowering perennials and annuals you can use. It is going to be fun to follow your garden from the start and see how it develops. I imagine you will be able to do a lot this winter while the rest of us are stuck inside.

I work nights, so looking for good links gives me something to do. I'll keep posting more as I find them.

I should change the title of this thread to photos and articles on cottage gardens, but I don't know how. Here is a really good article on the front yard garden. Don't miss page 2. There are also links to other articles on page one. After reading the article, I think I need a picket fence to connect my 2 arbors.

Another good article: Designing the Country Cottage Garden.

This English Cottage garden of Lyn and Malcolm looks more like a California cottage garden to me, but I love it. check out all the photos in the links to the left and be sure to see the Clematis slideshow!

Today feels like a nap day so won't be looking at stuff until tonight, but I will eagerly do so!!!!!

And, Jude, I hope you are feeling better! Bet you feel just a bit better about "digging in" on your new beds - you've got a very good thing started there and I'm excited for you.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Thanks for the kind offer murmer! Since I'm old enough I could be a great grandmother, I hope you don't mind adopting an "older child." My Mom is still alive, but I would not mind having 2 Moms. She is in her late 80's and still does most of her own gardening and yard work. I enjoy searching for interesting links and it gives me something to do on the long quiet, nights I work.

Here is Chelsea Garden Show 2006. Not real gardens, but great ideas.

Wouldn't it be great to have street side plantings like these in France in every town? Photo taken by Colin Elliott.
