Gladiolus Info. for cold day planning!

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Oh it is a cold rotten day here, but it could be worse!

I have already spent the Crown jewels on all sorts of bulbs this autumn, now what do I do for the rest of the cold spell? It's only just beginning in earnest!

I thought I would look up some good information on Gladiolus, my appetite is getting seriously whetted, I can see this is my next big addiction.

I have already got many species seeds to grow, now I want all those lovely hybrids too!

Some general info from the good old BBC, some adjustments for different climates to be made

wowzers on gladiola.com link. I would love to buy Fiesta and Funtime for a play on color, planting reverse together.

also, very interested on the minis. Janet or anybody else, have experience with the minis? unfortunately, no pics of minis on this website. Would love to get Nicholas, which is my neighbor's son (and fave pet sitter).

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

No experience with minis voss, perhaps someone will come and give advice here!

I am Soooooooooooo jealous of that selection, there are some absolute must haves there!

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

voss have you looked at the home page? They had a note there but the site at the bottom had an update date of April 15th so it will be out of date, you could email them and ask when they start to sell again.

http://www.gladiola.com/

There is a Gladiolus FAQ link where all growing info is given

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

i have found the site I was looking for which should give European growers a good selection.

The Great Western Gladiolus Nursery, they have a web site but only an info page. The RHS Nursery finder gives details and a list to view, at the bottom of the page.

I think I will be getting The Great Western Gladiolus Nursery catalogue for next year.

I put the RHS list next to the stoopflowerbulb.nl site and checked the ones they had listed against the pictures.

There were a great deal more that weren't on there, but some I found many made me gasp, eyes pop out, must have those........check them out on here

Hi lurker, any more lurkers who would like to contribute too?

Christopher is stunning! These minis do have their uses!

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Morning Janet, Thanks.... I thought I had more pictures of the others but cannot find them........I'll keep looking...............These I ordered from Brecks

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

I spoke yesterday w/ Gary Adams of Gladiola.com. Very nice man, he said minis are "hot" and for lack of time, he hasn't posted pics of the minis he grows. I think this company would be perfect for a coop early next year, for Mar-Apr delivery. He is open to a group purchase but he didn't sound too willling to do a discount. But who knows, he might give a bit of a break. Gary works at the post office full time, and the glad business is his passion/hobby/thing he'll do when he retires in 6 years.

BTW, I am not volunteering to host a coop, I've co-hosted the Amaryllis coop. There are many other reliable, honest and organized subscribers that can undertake this project. Mini glad bulbs should be easy, as long as you don't have 1 gazillion participants. I would be glad to help the host/hostess by providing tips I learned (many helped me) and I'm sure other successful hostesses would be willing to provide input as well.

The website that wallaby posted above, gladiola.com has a listing of minis w/ descriptions, but no pics.

lauriwilson, I love your mini glads. Makes me want some for sure.

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Gosh where do these people find time to work as well as run a business and grow the things as well!

Thanks Lauri for the pic, I would love to see the rest if you can find them.

Anyone else have pics of minis?

Northeast, LA(Zone 8a)

Check out the glads on this site. I have not seen these anywhere else in the US but then I might have been looking in the wrong places. http://www.telosrarebulbs.com/Gladiolus.html

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

See what a good bit of searching can find?

Thanks for adding the link Riverland. It is posted on one of the other threads, but not everyone has seen them.

boojum emailed them, and they will be selling again in spring if anyone is interested.

silverhill in Sth Africa has quite a few new Gladiolus species in now, that means I will definitely end up in the poorhouse! Grab them while you can.

I did all my searching last night to try to eliminate some, I managed to knock it down to 13 more on top of the 14 species I already got from them!

The link is here if anyone is interested. They do take Paypal, the only safe way to send money there. You need to email to ask about this, then place the order and wait for their final tally, the postage is very reasonable. Most packets have 25 seeds, the occasional rarer one will have slightly less, and some have an option to purchase 100 seeds for very little more.

Try the 'name' search option and type in gladiolus.

www.silverhillseeds.co.za

They quote in $ if you click the 'rest of the world' option after going to the catalogue.

I would advise anyone to ask how easy it is to receive their seeds in America, but I do know people buy them from there.

There is a form you can fill out to apply for importing small amounts of seeds from the Govt., it is free, possibly a little cumbersome, but if you foresee any problems it would be well worth the effort to get these rare seeds. They do have many other very interesting Sth African seeds.

The info is here

Hi All,
I ordered my gladminis from Breck's also. I didn't have any luck with them though. I am thinking it was where I planted them. I wanted them to line a fence, and I just don't think they were happy there.

Hi dwerland, I wonder if your corms were mature, the last time I tried some I bought a pack of Black Jack, not minis but they looked a bit small and did nothing. I wonder if anyone else has had a problem with the same supplier?

I have been looking around, forgot what I started with but I found this supplier, it mentioned on the link they grow over 400 acres of glads. so a grower might give something better.

http://www.nowetagardens.com/catalog.html

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

Wallaby, you round up the best links. Mr Gary Adams from Gladiola.com sent me a catalog a few days ago and some of the codes didn't make a bit of sense to me. There are great explanations at Nowetagardens, so I should be able to read my way through. Still have my heart set on glaminis. I know Mr. Adams is really involved with the natl glad assn, either he or someone he recommends should be a good miniglad supplier.

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Funnly enough I found that on a link when searching UK bulb suppliers! I think that's what it was, I got closed down and lost it all and can't find the same one!

Well folks, I am getting somewhere! For UK or perhaps Europe too here we go! No pics here but lots on offer if you can find the pics perhaps on teh Dutch site.

http://www.devinenurseries.co.uk/plantlist14.html

Great Western Glads website link there, no online varieties but it does mention species!

http://www.thegardeningwebsite.co.uk/gladiolus-c6581.html

Another good one for the UK, the main suppliers to garden centres here is Taylors, all those little packs hung up with bulbs in are theirs. Walkers I came across and they are a subsidiary, the glads will be in their summer list which isn't open yet, but if you want a lot of bulbs then free delivery over £40 orders. You will get many more varieties here, all they have in fact plus some they don't list....just look at the lengthy daffs list.

isn't it surprising that there are hardly no pics of mini glads?

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

There are 6 pics on the glamini.nl site, I came across it in the links on the stoopflowerbulb.nl site. They said they selected 12 favourites but didn't show them all. I clicked the flower symbol for the 6, the camera symbol has links to 8 sections with pics too

Zoe is just your colour!

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Janet I looked through the pics on those links for the longest time last night, and woke up still captivated with glaminis! There you go again! You truly are a bad influence, lol (like I need any help!). Now I've got to find sources for them here. I've already got the plan in my head; start the pots in late winter with fast growing foliage, like wondering Jew and other trailers, then start poking the bulbs in when they go out in spring. They look like vased arrangements! I love the idea of them for my very contrived looking tropical garden behind the house.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

neal don't feel bad. I dreamed I have every color of those dang glaminis! lol

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Nery, now I'm convinced she's using something subliminal, LOL.

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

It's that UPO, have you seen it? Look on the Lily Forum The Dawning of.. Pt2. Something strange going on here..

I'm convinced I have to get The Great Western Gladiolus catalogue too! It's a shame they are not online, I will have to sort them out with my UPO. I didn't dream of them, I think I wore myself out and slept like a log...or it was the UPO.

You're right Neal, they do look like a vase of flowers, what's the betting Nery ends up with every colour?

Anyways, I found another source here for species and specie types. Search in the box.

http://www.hillviewhardyplants.com/keyword.lasso

For Nery Breck's have a collection including 5 types of glamini

http://brecks.com/product.asp?pn=69614&bhcd2=1164739541

does this coupon apply, $25 off any order of $50 or more? The collection is $54.99 for 2 different or of the same, or $29.99 for the glamini only.

Thanks to vossner asking a question about gladiolus corms I decided to do a google 'gladiolus corms' to see what I could find out as part of the learning process. I found a good page of information,

http://www.devonian.ualberta.ca/getgro24.html

I also found a UK site which sells show gladiolus and has a link to other bulbs, daffodils as well as other bulbs and species, they may be more expensive but you get the quality,

Lincoln Park, MI(Zone 5a)

Beautiful !!

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

I love Eva, I can see the species influence in that one, and Charlotte would go well with a richer colour to tone it down. What does one say about Christopher? It's a riot of colour, get out the way other plants!

I see Comet on the top right of your first pic Bernie, I'm still searching for that one, what a beauty!

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

Bernie those are fabulous. Perhaps you will have the time to enter the glaminis in our Plant Files, there are so few pictures anywhere.

Janet the devolian link is great and very complete. wonder if it would qualify to become a "sticky" entry. You have dmail.

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Perhaps Terry will consider the 'sticky' feature later when all else has been got out the way, at the moment the Garden search feature is in process and going great guns. The photo competition is also in process of viewing, things are hotting up on DG lately!
