When I was in Costa Rica, I had the best tasting fruit at the market...and now of course I can't remember the name of it. Does anyone know?
(its the red fruit with weird little puffer-fish looking spikes in the front of the picture)
does anyone recognize this red fruit?
Those are 'Rambutan'.
They're very yummy. My parents (live in S.E. Asia) have several trees in their property. Here in the U.S. you can get them canned in Asian food market. Of course not as great as the fresh one, but can pretty much satisfy the craving if needed :o)
This is a wikipedia link for it...

fresh fruits also available in Asian markets when in season... sometime during the summer time.

Rambutan and Lychee are not one and the same, although they belong to the same genus or family. they are as different as apples and oranges, http://www.proscitech.com.au/trop/l.htm
edited to add one more link http://www.rbgkew.org.uk/ksheets/lychee.html , http://blog.wfmu.org/freeform/2005/08/tropical_fruit_.html

yeah, if you like the momon chino (I think that is how the Tico's called them) you will like lychee / litchi and also give a try to another fruit called longan
