Recipient of 7 big ferns, and know zip about them!

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Hello fern folks!

As our first cold snap will be here this evening, the
locals are tossing their ferns to the curbs. They would
be dead by morning, anyhow, so I guess the folks are
saving the mess by discarding them today.

Long story short, I am not too proud to rescue curb
side plants, so I saved seven of them.

They are in fair condition, root bound and very dry.
Here is my plan of action. I would be forever thankful
if anyone could tell me if this is a good idea or not
in trying to save them.

I believe I'll take them out of their baskets, cut them
in four sections, cut off all of the dead and soak
them overnight. Then I'll repot them all with good soil,
of course keeping them in the little greenhouse until spring.

Does this sound like a good idea?
I certainly appreciate any and all assistance you can provide.

Thanks a mil,
Karen Marie

WUVIE, I too, am a curbside fern rescuer. Just got hooked on it this year while trolling for bagged leaves and pinestraw. I have "rescued" around 10 ferns -- mostly boston, some kimberly queen, and one I think is a giant sword fern. I have trimmed them all back to about 8-10 inches, and have them hanging in my garage unless it is a nice warm day, when I bring them out to the driveway for some better light. Some were terribly frost bitten when I found them, and almost all are showing signs of new growth. I just have to remember to keep them nicely watered. We'll see -- this is mostly an experiment for me. Also, I have had great success indoors with three Kimberly Queens I rescued off the street during the height of drought this summer. It is so much fun to revive a plant that has been given up for dead.
