(a vendor of more than 400 kinds of cucurbits).

Have any of our European DG members ordered from this company?

I'm curious because this squash caught my fancy: http://www.kcb-samen.ch/shop/product.php?products_id=133400 but everywhere else on the net the pumpkin is shown to look more like this: http://www.neseed.com/store/media/32437_Fairytale_Pumpkin.jpg

So now I'm wondering if KCB-Samen is taking pictures of an unripe Fairytale or ?

I agree with you that it is most likely an unripe squash. Some that were shown as green that I have grown this year are turning orange as they ripen - nothing like the picture apart from their shape. It looks a nice one though.

Thank you for confirming that for me Pat! :) I might try planting the seeds then at different times in hopes of getting a few to look like the unripe one above for a Hallowe'en decoration (my season may not be long enough for it to ripen anyways;). I'm a little leary of companies that advertise that way BUT they have so many unusual varieties (that I haven't seen elsewhere) that I prolly will take a chance and put a small order in with them.

Pat which ones did you grow this year?

Sheffield, United Kingdom(Zone 7b)

I've grown Butternut squash "Sprinter" which is a fast growing one for our short summers, Penasco Cheese a productive one from Seeds of Kokopelli, Blue Banana for the novelty value, but I haven't tasted it yet. The largest are Galeuse d'Eysines - an orange pink skin with funny warts, this is said to have a good flavour, and finally Green Hokkaido which had some large fruits and some smaller which looked quite different. I'll let you know how they all taste later.

I also like the flavour of Pompeon and Uchiki Kuri (I hope that is how you spell it!)

We have had a long warm summer this year for a change, but I brought all the squashes and pumpkins last week to ripen off indoors as I thought we might get a frost. We haven't had one yet, but it has been quite close to freezing on a few nights.

Galeuse d'Eysines http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/91927/index.html One I grew this year but won't try till after Hallowe'en (much too pretty to eat yet;)

Pat I hope you have a digital camera (or can borrow one) so that pics of yours can be entered into the PlantFiles. :) I've found many still aren't listed there and while some can be found on the net many vendors don't have the accompanying picture. Plus it's always interesting to see how they look grown in different locations.

I'll be able to get a photo of the Butternut squash "Sprinter", but I've mixed up all the others they were growing through one another and I couldn't say for sure which ones some of them are as they are quite similar, so I'll have to be more careful next year and remember to get photos for the plant files before I pick them.
