Last week, I saw a brownish gray moth flying around one of my iris beds. Now, a leaf on one of the plants has two areas that are chewed out in the middle of the leaf. I think that the moth was laying eggs for the iris borer. Is there anything that I can do now to get rid of them, other than clean up all the plant debris and destroy it? What can I do in the spring, and I guess I need to do it to my other bed that is about 50 feet away? I also have one rhizome that was mushy on the top, where the fan joins the rhizome. What could that be and how do I deal with it? This is a completely new iris bed and I was looking forward to spring and the display.
Help! I think I have iris borers!
I treated my irises with Seven Dust when I noticed some rot and tiny thread-like worms inside some of the rhizomes eatting away to their hearts content. The Seven Dust did the trick and now all are looking good and the afflicted ones have recovered. I did dig up those that showed alot of rot, rinsed them really well in bleach water solution and then let them air dry thoroughly before replanting them again and dousing them too with the Seven Dust.
Thanks so much. I'll try that.
Here's a couple links, the second one shows squeezing the leaves to kill the larva, if you don't want to use poison
