Okinawan Sweet Potato

Franklin, NC(Zone 6b)

I've been all over the Internet looking for a source for these. They're grown in Hawaii and on the west coast, but they can't be shipped from Hawaii without being irradiated, and I can only find produce wholesalers who ship bulk lots. I'd like a few to bake, and if I can store them long enough, try to produce a few slips in the spring. Is anyone seeing it in the Asian markets out there? There's a purple one at Sand Hill Preservation, but I don't think it's the same thing.

Ag.Ten years ago Calvin E.Watt of Unique Seed Service,Ethel MO.listed it in the Seed Savers Exchange Yearbook. He discribed it as being light skined with purple flesh.I do not know if he still offers.Perhaps a member of SSE can advise if anyone has it available.I think SSE has a web site and may be of help.

That certainly sounds like it. Good idea, I'll see what they can find. But still, anyone out there seen this one at the markets?

A sweet potato called Okinawa has been offered by a GA member as late as last year. It's described as white-skinned with lavender flesh. Says it's pretty, and good, but not very productive. Slips originally came from MO WA C in '93...(most likely the Calvin Watt in the above post, as the letters denote a member in MO with the initals of C WA)
