Here's the winner from yesterday's Topsfield Fair giant pumpkin contest. They didn't post the official weight yet, but I think it came in at around 1200 lbs.:
Winner from Topsfield, MA
That is one hefty pumpkin! It will be interesting to see how much the winner of the Half Moon Bay pumpkin festival weighs. That's coming up in a couple of weeks. How do these giant pumpkin growers keep the local wildlife away from these things! How many people do you think that monster will feed?
And how do they get it from the field to the fair?!
kmom, the fair gets volunteers to roll the big ones onto a wooden pallet wrapped in blankets, then they load it onto a trailer or a pickup. The fair then uses forklifts to bring them into the main arena for the weigh-off. It's a big deal around here! The winner gets $10,000, plus seed sales.
The biggest problem is: what to do with a thousand pounds of rotting pumpkin come next spring!!! YUCK!
Do you know the name of the grower?
Not yet! He/she will have their picture in the paper, probably Mon. I'll check!
