small rotating composter ...

Frisco, TX(Zone 7b)

Saw this in a catalog I got in the mail ...

http://www.gaiam.com/retail/product/14-0020

It's small and "hide-able" I am in a community where the "rules" are strict and unfortunately enforced by several individuals who take great pleasure in said enforcement ... but I digress :)

Anyone have one of these or give any thoughts to options ???

Thanks

It would be nice to have a community garden forum on DG, since community gardeners must face some issues that don't arise in private gardens.

Have you read the compost tumbler/barrel threads:

That is the truth, GM. I no longer garden at the community garden, but I did for years. There are many issues that came up which eventually drove me to my yard, when I finally got a space large enough for a garden.
It almost felt as if the country employees thought the community garden was a royal pain and did everything in their power to discourage it. They failed. Many people still garden there.

I've suggested a community garden forum to the DG folks. Perhaps they can do a poll to see how many folks are currently or have in the past, gardened in a community setup. I think it would be a useful way to find solutions to some of the issues that drive people away. My DH and I have very mixed feelings. On the one hand, we love the sharing that takes place with our garden friends. On the other hand, we hate the politics. Ours is a new garden, still in the forming stage. We are hoping things will settle down over time. It DG does open a community garden forum, I hope you will visit and share your insights and experiences.

sublimaze, I don't have anything to say about the community thing, but as to the composter, that's exactly the kind I got, and I feel it's a huge waste of mooney. They had to eliminate the air holes because of pests and believe me, if you don't get "the mix" just PERFECT you're wasting your time. I hate the thing. I've only tried two batches so far, but wound up throwing both of them into the compost pile. I did it exactly the way they said to. I can only guess it will work, but it beats the daylights out of me how. It's either cold or stinky or sometimes both. I'd really advise against it, except it does make good compost tea. But if you want compost, this is NOT (IN MY EXPERIENCE) the way to make it. Sorry. Believe me, I wish it were. I've heard people actually have had good luck with the ComposTumbler, but they're mighty proud of those.

thanks for the input - I am still on the fence about the composting ... but the tumbler seems to be pretty much out. I'll save my money.
