"lasagna beds"

La Salle, MI(Zone 5b)

I am interested in doing this, I was wondering, do I make the bed now and
plant it, in the spring, or do I wait to do both in the spring? or does it matter?
I asked this question in another thread and got ignored.
So would someone PLEASE help me.
Thanks Connie

Connie, you need to talk to MaryE. She did a lasagna bed. I don't know if I can find the thread. I'll check and see. bbl.

this one's a good read, lots of info. :)

Thanks kooger, she has a beautiful garden.
My problem would be, I don't have the ingredients she has....
No way of getting it either :o(

In one of the other threads, the person used news papers, mulch and peat moss. Which those items I have. I also have some organic potting soil. But that is my limit of things on hand. Wonder if these ingredients will work.

Should I do it now or wait til the spring, I don't have the plants but I have tons of seed (alot of which I am going to ws.)

Connie do it now! Lay down a thick layer of newspaper and then top soil, mulch and peat on top in another thick layer. You will be able to plant in the spring.

If you have the time, I would do it now. I don't know that it would matter all that much but I think the freezing and thawing would break it down nicely. Around my hostas I put 8-10 layers of newpapers and then abt 3" of bark mulch because I have this awful weed that becomes a mat and covers up everything. That worked great and it still looks good this year. I did that a year ago in the summer.

Thanks for jumping in Carol. That's pretty much what I was thinking. :)

I seen that one kooger and asked the question there and got ignored :o(

Thank you both for all your help. dh has gone to lowes to get a few things I need for my WS and to pick up some more peat moss for me.

We are going to be getting thunder stormes here for the next 4 days, So I will have to wait a few days to get started. but I am excited :o)

have to go thru all my news papers, our News Paper Co has started putting colors in their papers now :( but I can salvage a lot of it.

Thanks again for all your help. Connie

Hi, connie--on the other thread are several good links that explain the timing, steps to take, and the choices to make on the plantings. You may want to study those for answers to your questions. I don't think you were ignored on the other thread, I think others felt that your question was already addressed in the discussion. Sorry.

From what you are saying, it sounds like you can start your bed now, perhaps add more chopped leaves as the fall progresses, and by spring have a nice planting space for some of your new seedlings. I think more chopped leaves would be an important and easy to obtain addition to your layering mix, ---not that I'm an expert! I'm newish on this, too!

Going thru all my news papers, I discovered they are all colored ink, much to my disappointment. But I have a B in L that works for a company that makes card board boxes (all sizes) I can get as much of that as I want, will this do just as good as the news papers??? keeping fingures crossed :)

tabasco, I read that whole thread and there is good advice in there, but I didn't or couldn't find the answer I was looking for, but that is ok, you found me and helped. Thanks cg
