My husband and I spent 2-1/2 hours digging around an old 4 ft. in diameter, locust tree stump that was half rotten when we moved here 21 years ago. We used an electric chain saw and a good heavy 'no-bounce' hammer, dug down 1 ft. all around.
The saw made some grooves in it, smoked and was reoiled time and again. Locust wood is as hard as bone - or iron -. We have most of it cut to about 2 inches below ground level, but would really like to remove it completely.
It is in an area where we cannot get any heavy machnery - such as backhoe, bulldozer, stumpgrinders in to help.
What will dissolve well aged locust stumps?
Edited - the stump is 4 ft. not 9 ft. in diameter, (giggle)
