silly question-too late to plant salad greens ?

Issaquah, WA

Just currious if it was too late to start some salad greens outdoors from seed. I have never done this before and have heard that they do well in cooler weather.

Or is it just better to wait until the end of frost this spring ?

I would think that you could have them in a protected area, such as a coldframe, or garden tent. I'm sure a veggie gardener will be along soon and answer your question better than I.

seed might be a little optimistic, but if you protect them from frost or have a variety that doesn't mind a little frost, you'll be able to harvest some. Lettuce doesn't like heat and will get really bitter if grown in too much heat or without enough water. You might also try chard which is very frost tolerant and able to be kept all winter. I usually move my 2nd planting of lettuce to a shady spot in June/July and they are huge right now.
