CLOSED: Another Dragonfly

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

This one likes to perch up on the top of a small tree I have out in the field next to the yard.

Any ideas on the name of this one? I remember seeing and reading about one that likes to put it's front legs behind it's head like this one is doing, but for the life of me I can't remember which one it was. I've looked at so many over the last few days, they all start to run together . . . lol

I'll post another view next . . .

Here's the other side . . . not sure that will help, but here it is.

And one more of a different type.

This one is a little shorter in length but about the same size head and eyes. Much more colorful and somewhat approachable.

#1 could be Brachymesia Furcata, Red-tailed Pennant, it has the darker patch on the wings but yours does look to be a large patch

Thanks for the help and links . . . . for some reason I get the "You are not authorized to view this page" error when I click on the pbase links. Is that a members only site by chance?

The color in the image of the red one is lacking due to the angle and lighting, but I don't think mine was *as* bright of red as some of the red-tailed pennants I've seen photos of. Of course that don't mean that's not what it is . . . I obviously can't see what the pbase links show, so if the ones there have the larger patch at the base of the wings or not?

I looked at some Thornbush Dasher photos (2) on the bugguide site and the thorax looks different to me. It may just be the angles of the photos?

Thanks again for the help.

The pbase link open for me, perhaps try typing the web address in?

Someof these pics are taken in perfect conditions with high image quality, a little higher quality than our own eyes would see them as. The flash also makes reds look brighter.

The patches on the wings on the Red-tailed Pennant are not big, I was wondering if it might have been the angle on yours making it look bigger? There are 2 black marks near the tail end on the top.

More pics,

There is another called a Neon Skimmer with larger patches on wings but not dark, it looks even more red and doesn'thave the black marks on tail end

That pbase site has dragonflies of Texas and Mexico

The Thornbush dasher does look to have the correct markings, angle does make a difference, some more pics

I put the pbase web address in and got the home page, it's a photo site, if you can get it you can go to a search link and three ways to search, by key word, camera or country. I tried Micrathyria hagenii and got 4 pics

Well I got a positive ID on the 1st one and added him to the BugFiles DB . . . it's a Red Saddlebags.

The second one is another female Blue Dasher, not sure why I didn't catch that . . . must have been up too late looking at bugs . . . lol

Thanks again for the help and info,

Dee - is this chart the center piece that TP&W had in their magazine a couple of years ago with about 50 dragonflies on it?
