CLOSED: Brown Leafy Moth - ID anyone?

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

I almost swept this little guy off the porch the other day thinking it was a leaf. A closer look shows it is some sort of a moth that mimics a leaf.

I think it's one of the sphinx moths, don't know which, though.

GD, Here's a great web site that has two pages of sphinx moth photos. If it's not on the first page, click to go to the next page....

I'll keep looking too

I'll keep looking too. Did you get a shot of the underwing, or the body? That would help so much.

CJ - No . . . silly me . . . I wasn't thinking about getting an ID on this lil rascal when I saw him/her. I just took it's pic because I thought it was rather neat looking and liked how it so closely resembles a leaf. I did get a couple more photos, but I'm not sure they'll help. I didn't get the underwing and the only body you can see is the back end of it. I'll add them just in case there is something that will help.

I did see claypa's note (thanks for that tip) earlier and did some searching online for sphinx moths, but was unable to find anything close and had to run to town before I finished checking all the sites I found.

I see one on the 2nd link that looks to be close, but I'm not sure it's a match. Here's the one I mean . . . see what ya'll think?

I'll keep look'n too. :)

Thanks for the help.

PS. After checking the larger image of the one I posted a link to up there ^ . . . I don't think that's it either . . . still look'n.

Meanwhile, the image quality isn't the greatest on these two, so that's why I didn't add them earlier. But here they are anyway . . .

I found one that has the same basic shape but the color is a little different. This maybe a Gaudy Sphnix?

I submitted my photos to the Bug Guide site . . . maybe someone on there can give us a positive ID?

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

Ok . . . I finally got a positive ID on this one. It's a Walnut Sphinx Moth -- Laothoe juglandis. I added the images to the BugFiles Details page for this one.

Thanks again everyone,
GD

Thanks, GD! I've also seen that moth and didn't have a name for it either. It's also listed as Amorpa juglandis, from what I'm reading now. Gee, you'd think they'd get together on those names, wouldn't you? And its caterpillars use walnut trees (among others). I wonder why I haven't ever seen those cats on the black walnuts on my property?

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

Yeah read that also about the Amorpa juglandis name. The whole multi name thing for bugs and plants is real corn'fuzzle'n at times huh?

That's interesting about the walnut trees . . . I have a hickory tree or two out here, wonder if they like those too? I'm never looked for the cats in them, but wouldn't be surprised to find some there.

NE Medina Co., TX(Zone 8a)

Oh, yes! Hickory is listed as a host plant also. We really need to look for those some time.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

Ahh ok . . . well I have one Hicory tree that's pretty large and a few mid-size ones. I'm sure they're on them at some time.
