I just came back from Chalk Hill Clematis where I purchased a few plants. One of the plants I purchased is intended for a container to grow up a wall. It is a large flowered but smaller type (4-6 ft). I asked the proprieter what size conainer is required and he pointed to a suprisingly large container, perhaps 50 gallons!
Since the container would be on a 4' wide walkway a container of this size is probably out of the question. My original intent was to make a wooden box but if its too big it may look awkward. I was wondering from peoples experience here what size container is required for a healthy plant?
I can make a rectangular box and plant it with lobelia or similar in addition to the clematis.
As an example, 50 gallons is about 6.5 cu ft. If the box is 2' wide and 1' deep it would have to be about 3' tall which would look very strange!
Thanks
Clematis in a container
Sounds like overkill to me. What variety is it?
If it's only supposed to get 4-6 feet tall, there's no way it's going to need a 50 gallon container. Probably don't even need half that size!
If it were me, and I don't always make the right choices. I would figure out what the normal width of the plant is and them select a pot accordingly. For a two foot wide plant on a trellis, I would probably use a standard 18 inch pot.
