When do you harvest the seed heads if you want to use them for making brooms?
Broom Corn
When the stalk is just about dry. Cut the stalks and hang them to dry for a couple of weeks, comb out the seeds and you are ready to go. I fyou have not done this before, it is work. When I was a kid, all in house brooms were made by hand from broom corn. More round brooms than the flat type because they were easier to make.
They still make brooms at the Parke County Covered Bridge Festival [Billie Creek Village] in the fall.....western Indiana
Thanks farmerdill.
I have seen them in shops down in Shipshewana Ind and want to make some.
