I purchased this plant from a local retailer on a whim. I don't know much about Bonsai care but would like to know what this is. I would also like some advice on how to shape it. Any other info is welcome.

It's Ficus retusa (aka F. microcarpa, aka commonly Cuban Laurel)
Cultural preferences are same as Ficus benjamina - appreciates full sun & being outdoors in summer, fast drainage, being allowed to dry down between waterings (especially in winter). A fertilizer that's low on the N will be appreciated and will help control overly long internodes (distance between leaves) and help to keep leaf size in proportion to o/a plant size.
