Ohio Ornithological Society Fall Special Meeting Sept. 30

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

Hi everyone--

For those of us who are interested in birds in the ORV -- from watching our backyard feeders to serious 'birding' in the wilds--A recently organized group, the Ohio Ornithological Society, offers interesting educational birdwalks and speakers in partnership with other organizations whose missions include bird and nature conservation and interests.

The meetings and guided walks are held throughout Ohio and cover a range of topics. The speakers are pre-eminent academics and nationally known birding hobbyists. The meetings are open to members and non-members but membership in OOS, a two year old organization, is a nominal fee and open to anyone who is interested in birds--casual birders to advanced ornithologists.

I am a member of OOS (although a very beginner birder) and have learned a lot from their website and publications and hope to get to some of their lectures and birdwalks this year.

I thought I would pass along this Newsletter announcement from the OOS because it looks like a very special opportunity for those interested in learning more about our avian visitors--

ooooohhhh, that would be interesting! but unfortunately too far to go. : (

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6a)

That does sound interesting. I just got interested in birds this year when I started to fill my feeder regularly and was at home more to see who showed up. They're just fascinating.

This event sounds a bit far, but please do share other events as they are announced. Thanks!

Yes, it's a little far for us, but perhaps somebody closer will get to go. Here's a link to the local birders group which is quite active---

The Cincinnati Bird Club is another group that offers great bird walks and speakers right here in Southwest Ohio. They are active in hosting the Christmas Bird Count that is a lot of fun (for new birders and more experienced) and they need a lot of help on that.

Those are great sites, tabasco. I love birding, too. Haven't done it as much as since we moved here but hopefully will start up again soon.

Thanks for the bump. I haven't yet checked out those sites, but I'm curious again since I saw another hawk in the yard. Cool, but hard to identify.

I can't go to the meeting, either, but I've put my winter feeders out and have seen the Pileateds checking them out.

Time to put up the Owl Boxes, too.

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6a)

Pileated? Cool! I've only seen Downies and Red-bellieds on my feeders. The coolest thing in my yard, though, has been a Broad-winged hawk. As I've only got a quarter acre, much of the wildlife I see in the yard is "up close and personal". :)
