Hi, Can anyone tell me how much longer before my castor beans are ripe? Should I cut them off now and let them dry or will they dry on the plant? This is my first year growing them. I have read that they throw the seeds and wonder if there is a way to catch them before they hit the ground and get lost.
Just trying all sorts of new (to me) stuff. They do grow fast and tall, kind of like the look too.
castor bean seeds
Zoo,
In your climate the capsule will probably not 'pop'. Just wait until they turn brown and pick them as they ripen. It is best to leave the beans in their case until you are ready to plant, the seed keeps its vigor and less likely to dry out. And if you ever run out of seed ask me to go out and pick some for you, they grow all over the place here in FL. I have seen some that were 20' tall.
dale_a_ gardener, Thanks for the information.........thats just what I will do.
And .. if I don't get any ripe ones, I know who to contact (-_-)
