Japanese iris

Jefferson, NH(Zone 3b)

I am hoping that someone out there can help me. I am helping a friend clean up an overgrown iris bed.containing about 300 plants After extreme weeding it is clear that in one distinct area there is a problem with the iris located there. Most of the foliage on them has withered and died back and in several cases the rhysomes are rotting. On a couple there is some new regrowth but it is minimal. They want to move all these plants and I am leary until we find out what is going on. Any ideas??

How long have they had the japanese in the same area?
I found out the hard way you have to move japanese irises every 4 years.
They start getting smaller and smaller and soon die out if you don't.
They supposedly use up all the nutrients in the soil and have to be moved
to a new area. I lost alot of mine until I realized what the problem was.
I hope they have a new area with new soil to move them to.
Hope this helps.

Bump!

Thanks, Shirley - my four years will be up for a few of my JI's so I'll be moving them in September.

What happened with the JI's fruitlands?

Pirl,

FYI fruitlands is no longer a subscriber.

Then I guess it will remain a mystery. Thanks, Judy.
