What could this be?

I admit I planted a mess of seeds etc and have forgotten what some were. This is so beautiful, but I don't have a clue what it is.

Yep .. I agree with you ardesia .. that's a dahlia. I grew some last year, a variety called Bishops Children. Very colorful.
