'dry set' pavers in sand

I have been researching the method known as 'dry set' pavers in sand to make a patio area w/ a friend. Instructions vary. I want simple! cutting the soil out a depth of (height of paver + 2" fine sand )is that adequate? Some instructions have 1-2 inches of gravel and then sand and then paver. We are using plain ol' Lowes 12x12x? concrete paver. What is your success story?
