hi,
i have a nelly moser clematis, that i want to grow up the side of my garage, between the two double doors. it is a type two, so the vines are not cut back. i need some information on what type of container might work best through a zone 5 winter. right now i have a 22" square faux planter. the type of thing that they make to look like cement, but is light like styrofoam. i also have a ~25" round whiskey barrel. i'm also willing to buy another type.
are there things you can do to help keep the roots warm/insulated inside the container?
any and all information would be appreciated.
thanks,
debi z and my little gardening doggi franklin
containers, clematis and winter
Should be just fine in either container without any special precautions. You can mulch if you want, but only after the ground freezes, then take it off on the first frost-free day in the spring. Otherwise, clematis does just fine in containers over the winter. I have two, both jackmanii, and did have a sweet autumn some years ago, but it outgrew my balcony LOL
debiZ - I grew Nelly Moser in containers my husband had made from a worn out water heater. They were about three feet tall 1/4" steel. (He made two out of one tank by cutting it in half around its circumference) Had her for many years in our Zone 6 winters, which used to get to 15-20 below zero.

so clematis doesn't die in the winter??
Nope. Unless you're a lower zone than 5, and if they're in the ground they can overwinter anywhere.
i am in zone 7....so will they stay green?? or lose the leaves??
Most are deciduous, but it depends on the variety.
thank you for this great news. i just love dg gardeners. you are all so resourceful, willing to share and dang smart!
