I just notice this plant in a magazine. It's called a Black Lace Elderberry and it's hardy down to zone 4.
I know that I may be in trouble here, but it might be worth a try for you frozen gardeners who like the look.

Whew - closest listing was in Nashville. I may be safe from buying one until next year. It is really pretty and leaves do look similar to the japanese maples. Thanks for sharing that doss - I'll just have to add that one to my wish list.
We are too warm for it. The big garden catalog starting with 'W' (edited to say Wayside) that I can't remember right now is supposed to be carrying it in the spring. I'll edit it if I remember or if someone can remind me.

Thanks xman - we have a Wegman's nursery here in town and once I get that in my head, Wayside is just unattainable.
I'm sure you know xman, but folks should be careful and check the watchdog before ordering from Wayside.
