need to replace my snail vine

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

I need to replace my snail vine with something that doesnt grow 5 feet a day, but is bright and beautiful. My neighbor is crazy and actually seps over the fencen and is constantly hacking at my vines and my bogenvilla. I secretly hate him. He lets everything fall on the plants growing underneath.....

Try poison ivy... He won't hack at that too many times! (just kidding) I'm not familiar with what you can grow in your zone... but couldn't resist the ivy suggestion.. :)

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

lol. I swear if it is one half inch above the fence he is out there snip snip. My bogie wont even bloom because he must lean over and hack it 2 feet over on my side, and it would be beautiful in the corner. I was thinking maybe i should have my hubby nail up some lattice there, but i would think that would be more of an eyesore on his side the a plant blooming.

I had to plant tithonia in front of it so i could have some color

I love your snail vine. Maybe a nice row of barbed wire.

Oh no! The "plant on fence" war!!

I had a neighbor that would do the same thing. I had a climbing rose, and if it grew too tall, or on his side of the fence he'd chop it off. I also had a Mimosa tree. He asked if he could trim the branches a bit that hung over on his property, because the tree does tend to make a mess. So, what did he do? He cut an entire limb off, which required him to come into my yard to do so. My payback was to yank at all his English Ivy that was invading my yard through the fence. I pulled TONS of it up and through his fence.

Now, I'm in a new house, and one of my neighbors is even bolder. If he doesn't like the way I've trimmed my bushes or doesn't like something that's popped up in the bushes in between our two houses, even though I would like it to stay and it's on my property, he still chops it down. GRRR.

Oh, yeah, vines that does grow 5 feet a day. How about a clematis, or a climbing rose bush, or passiflora?

My snail vine grows the same way but I don't mind because it is one of the few vines that can take a good snippin and keep on tickin! If it starts to get out of control, I just take the garbage can and clippers and go to town. Right now I have an unused chain link dog run that is almost entirely engulfed in a combination of snail vine, passiflora incense, & ragoon creeper. If you go inside, it's like a green cocoon. I have 2 small fish ponds in there and a concrete block for a seat and will often go hide in there and escape from the world for 15 minutes or so. I keep thinking how nice a hot tub would be in there. It has chain link on top and the vines have covered the top as well as the sides. I have to cut back the vines that sneak down from the roof inside.

How about a nice thorny climbing rose? Beautiful flowers, and he'll at least prick his fingers when he tries to chop the top off.

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

He is apparently immune to thorns if the bougies don't bother him. LOL

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

I've always had better luck avoiding bougie thorns than I have with roses, I think the roses have more of them spaced closer together so they're harder to avoid (although the bougie ones hurt more if they get you!) Ooh...I know...blackberries! Not the nice new thornless ones, but the old fashioned kind. They have so many thorns, it's impossible to avoid sticking yourself if you touch them. I can't count the number of times I hurt myself trying to pull up the wild blackberry that had taken root in my old garden.

This is a funny thread. I have enjoyed it and I agree with AuntB give him some poison.

Both my neighbors love my yard and gardens. Guess I am the lucky one.

Steph, are your vines growing directly on your fence? You might consider cutting them back & putting in a support fence just for your vines and keeping it about a foot away from your fence. You will add some years to your fence life and make it harder for him to reach the plants. It will also give some space for the vines to fall behind instead of over the top of the fence.
I used that green plastic fencing on posts and it was quick and inexpensive. You cannot even see it once the vines grow over it.
I sure hope you are able to resolve this, it is really hard to live by someone that you cannot be friends with. Good luck! :~)

My neighbor and I had problems last year because my fence was rotting and my dogs would pull the weak boards off like toothpicks and go visiting which didn't make the neighbors happy. They are cat hoarders with 3 larges cages full of cats (which the city will do nothing about as long as the cats are licensed). Anyway, they grow pothos on a huge tree next to my fence and it is always creeping over and attaching to the fence and climbing over. Well, many of you may not be aware of just how large and heavy pothos can get grown outdoors but the leaves get as much as 4ft long and the stems several inches in diameter and can tear up a fence. Well, I threatened to replace the wood with chain link which naturally upset them so they agreed that if I replaced it with wood that they would keep it clear of the pothos vines. I do have wire stapled to my side of the fence in sections to I can used it for trellis for passis & corkscrew but they don't get the weight or grow into the wood like the pothos do. I saw a pothos sticking it's head up over the other side of the fence the other day and had to "remind" the neighbor to keep it clear.

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

whats pothos?

My vines are on trellises they are just completely covered, and my fence is only 3 years old. I kinda feel like a fence is temporary doesnt matter whats growing on it termites can easily infest a fence with nothing on it, and will need replacing every so many years.
I think that my neighbor just has a compulsive disorder. I dont mind him choping on his side, and I know the snail vine is invasive, but i did not know it when i planted it. Thats why i was willing to replace it, but choping my bogenvilla on my side, im going to secretely take pictures because it makes my blood boil. to go out and find my roses are snaped of because a branch was laying on it because he is choping away.

I never lived in a city before sandiego, and I thought everyone liked pretty yards and sharing cuttings boy was I wrong...... some people like dirt and round up....

Pothos is "Devil's Ivy." It has glossy, heart-shaped leaves with white stripes running through it.

Steph, if he's actually cutting things that are not hanging over into his yard, which it sounds like he is, you might be able to take some sort of legal action against him (sounds like you don't have a good relationship anyway, but this would destroy any hope of ever having one!) I know up here neighbor's pruning privileges extend only to things that actually overhang their property. So if your vine is sticking straight up and can be seen over the fence but isn't actually hanging over his property then he wouldn't be allowed to touch it, and he wouldn't be allowed to chop back over the fence line. Maybe he's not doing that, but from your description is sounded like he was. So I would check with your city what the rules are, then maybe inform your neighbor which rules he's not following, and if he still doesn't cut it out then I don't know if you call the cops or take him to small claims court or what, but I'm sure whoever knows what the rules are would also know what to do if someone's breaking them.

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

he totally is, just wait I know he cant resist this weekend, its about 2 inches above the fence line and about 2 feet in my yard........ Ill try to sneek a picture.

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

me and my hubby decided we will replace the snail vine though it doesnt bloom alot anyway, because it tends to bloom on ends and its constantly being hacked, it is also aphid heaven....

I wont something that is really vibrant. im putting my invasives on the otherside because my neighbors dont seem to care. my reed grass completely went in there yard and my red passiflora. but it actually looks good on his side, so maybe hes thatnking me seceretly...... kinda tropical.

Hi Steph...I met you at Dr. Don.s ...

This may sound boring and unoriginal, but what about ivy geraniums.?
If you're in San Diego you should get flowers most of the year like I do In Long Beach. You could plant several different colors together.

I see you have a wooden fence. Go to Home Depot and get those 4' x 8' sections of concrete reinforcing wire...it's in 5 or 6 inch grid pattern and you can easily use hammer-in staples to attach it to the fence cross rails. The sections are flat and easy to install. The geraniums will climb up through the grids in no time and are easy to keep in line. Get the sheets, not the stuff in a roll.

I did that for a friend and it has lasted for over 10 years. The wire is thick and already sort of rusted so it won't stand out too badly. To avoid color clash with the ivy geraniums I placed a white one about every three or 4 colors....I did it for these people when they were going to have their daughters wedding in their yard. In a year it was completely filled in and it still looks great...and that was in Woodland Hills.

One more thing....if he's a real creep, buy a bag of bird seed and every day throw some over the fence into his yard. He'll have weeds everywhere in a few days and will forget all about your vines!!!! LOL

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

lol i should
