I think you let the vine dry up slightly. I am told to not buy a melon from the store of the stem is still on it. This shows that it did not ripen on the vine. If it has fallen off AND has a large pale section where it sat on the ground, then it ripened there. So, for your melon, I'd leave it a while and see if the stem starts to dry up.

It looks like a Blacktail Mt. watermelon or possibly a Sugar Baby type. First of all wait until it has stopped growing in size. Then check the tendril [pigtail] next to the stem on the melon. This has to dry up and turn brown. Then wait a while more. Small melons do not turn creamy so well where they have rested on the ground and neither do they "thump" It is better to wait a little too extra than pick an under ripe one.
