How do I know when to pick my watermelon?
My watermelon
that thing is so darn cute, i could never pick it!
i don't know when you can pick it but when you do, send me a big slice. great looking melon
I think you let the vine dry up slightly. I am told to not buy a melon from the store of the stem is still on it. This shows that it did not ripen on the vine. If it has fallen off AND has a large pale section where it sat on the ground, then it ripened there. So, for your melon, I'd leave it a while and see if the stem starts to dry up.
Thanks!
It looks like a Blacktail Mt. watermelon or possibly a Sugar Baby type. First of all wait until it has stopped growing in size. Then check the tendril [pigtail] next to the stem on the melon. This has to dry up and turn brown. Then wait a while more. Small melons do not turn creamy so well where they have rested on the ground and neither do they "thump" It is better to wait a little too extra than pick an under ripe one.
It's a sugar baby. Thanks for the info!
Not as good so far this year as last year's extra good one...Hail really hurt too.
