duration of canna blooms?

My bengal tigers and some others are now blooming, but the blooms are lasting a max of 3 days, then they drop off -

am I doing something wrong or is this just the way it is?

Nope thats the way it is . Some canna blooms last longer then others paul

My bengal tigers look good for about 1 day then disheveled for another, ratty on the third and then fall off. I go around on the second day and help the disheveled ones fall off. ;-) The others, not bengals but grown from seed look nice for 2 or three days.

what is the pimply pod thing that is left behind?

It's the immature seed pod. If the flower was fertilized and not sterile, it will produce seeds.
