I bought this pricey Madame Julia Correvon Clematis because the tag said it performs well in warmer areas where large flowered Clematis will not grow. I planted it with care about two months ago and it seemed happy than suddenly looked sick. the flowers are few now.
We had a week of rain and this really didn't help the vine. Any ideas on what steps I should take? The roots were kept cool by shading with another plant.
My clematis is sad.
I don't see anything particularly wrong with your "Julia" except you need to prune her half way back and feed her some Rose or Tomato Fertilizer...she is a Viticella and blooms on new wood..you have enough growing season to have another bloom period...and remember to prune seed heads off when they finish..it conserves the energy of the vine and allows it to focus on blooming and growing instead of making seedheads...Jeanne
Thanks so much for the info. Should I prune the vine now? Should I dehead the flowers? Is deadheading the same as prune seed heads? I am a total newbie to this vine and was told I could never grow it in Louisiana.
Yes prune now...I think when you prune it half way back you won't have any seed heads to worry about..LOL..Yes deadheading is the same as pruning off the seedheads... you just cut the seedhead off with your pruners..and don't forget to fertilize...Share pics of your new blooms...Jeanne
Merci Beacoup Jeanne!
