New Battery for Laptop

I just bought a new battery for my ThinkPad. I'm getting conflicting instructions on how best to charge it.
One guy says to just put it in and charge it, I can use the pc while it's charging.
Another says to put it in and run it down until the laptop shuts down and won't come back up. Then plug in the charger for 6 hours before turning it back on.
I'm confused.
