What would cause this kind of damage?

Columbus, OH(Zone 5b)

At first I thought it could be where cutter bees laid their eggs, but now I don't think so.
Could it be damage from a grasshopper or some sort of boring worm/beetle?

No guesses?

Dovey, are you sure it isn't just stem canker?

Hi Terry,
I suppose, but it was a very healthy new cane and only affected in the one area.
We have quite a few grasshoppers in the rose garden and I thought perhaps that was the cause

I kinda agree with Terry. Is that discoloration in the pith of the cane? That would indicate a fungus....

Ceejay,
I think the discolouration is more like what happens when you slice an apple and it turns brown. I'll do some "stem canker" Googleing and see what I come up with.
Thanks

You can take a knife and slice off the outer thin layer of the stem - and the canker would still be running along under that green outer layer... I think that I can see, in the first picture, brown circular streaking, which indicates the fungus is in the xylem, or uptake area of the stem.
