we bought 4 clearance cantelope seedlings for my 6 year old to plant. these replaced the failed seeds from vacation bible school they planted in a cup. now we have enough cantelope for all of the county. no fruit yet, but i have kept the ends nipped off. we have a gazillion blooms. should i pinch off some of these blooms? how many would you leave on each vine?
cantelopes
It is best to leave both vines and blooms alone. Mother nature does not like a much interference with her canteloupes.
They seem to kind of regulate how many fruits they get at a time. If they can't support all the fruits, they just seem to let some of them go yellow and drop off the vine. And plus, not all the blooms are female, so only the females will actually have the potential to make a melon. Of those, they need to get pollinated. I have a ton of blooms on my melon vines, but usually only 2-3 melons at a time.
