Unknown Vine

Buffalo, NY(Zone 5b)

Would like to ID this vine. It has large palmate leaves, and the stems are rough almost like sandpaper. So far it has not bloomed. It appears to be a ground vine as it does not twine like a Morning Glory, nor does it have tendrils like a Clematis or Passion Flower. The picture is of a section on a sidewalk!

It looks like Virginia creeper. The blooms aren't much to look at but they do get berries that the birds like. They don't twine, they put out little pads on the ends of tendrils that they use to grab hold of things like walls and tree trunks.

The fall color is glorious. It's a native plant here and the dark red of the Virginia creeper in the fall is wonderful.

I could be wrong, but this looks just like one that came up in the ID forum recently -- check out japanese hops, http://www.ppws.vt.edu/scott/weed_id/humja.htm

Thanks ShelfLife I do believe that that's what it is. I was hoping for something with nice flowers, but I guess no such luck!

Denver, CO

I'm afraid it is not Virginia creeper.
I just found some of this outside of St. Louis. It looked pretty perennial (albeit herbaceaous) and had those more-lobed palmate leaves than the common Humulus lupulus. I'm pretty curious wether it is a subspecies of lupulus or if it is japonicus.

I have a very invasive vine that looks the same as this one. I have it all over my retaining wall. Someone told me that it is butter-cup. Mine does bloom in late spring (small & yellow). I only have a picture of the bloom ... Here it is... Not much folage to see...
