drilling holes in containers

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I just saw on tv that you should drill holes in the SIDES of a plastic pot instead of in the bottom////I have never heard of this. why would this be better?

I'm not a pro, in fact this is my first season of gardening. However, I would imagine that this is so you can get air to your roots. Also, if you have a plant sitting on the ground, then it can sometimes be difficult for the water to drain out the holes in the bottom. I think it would be easier for the water to drain out the sides, since that's open area. HTH, Deb.

makes sense thanks
