I'm planning to replace the grass near my iris bed with a no-mow groundcover -- Mazus. My experience is that Mazus behaves itself and grows around other shrubs and perennials, but it does create a very thick carpet. So my question is -- how would a living carpet would affect irises? Would they not bloom because the rizomes don't get enough sun?
Irises and groundcovers?
It's my understanding that irises don't like anything on them. Supposed to keep their beds clear of weeds and no mulch. They like the sun on the top of their rhizomes and having them covered by groundcover may encourage rot, too much moisture. Hope I'm right and that this helps.
They do not like anything over the rhizome...many groundcovers are wonder for most plants but if it mats, better look to something else.

Thanks for the info. I'll protect my beauties with edging stones.
