Is this a friend or a foe?

I don't believe I've ever seen one of these before. This photo was taken after dark, so it's a little hard to see, but I wanted to snap some sort of photo in case I can't get one in the daytime.

I believe that's a katydid. It usually feeds up high in the trees - it's the insect that makes the noises at night. The cicadas make the noise in the daytime.

It does feed on plants (trees), but it doesn't usually do any real damage.

Thanks! I was afraid it was a nasty thing that was going to eat everything in sight.

Joan,

This is the first time I've had a problem with them, but the katydid nymphs have been eating just about everything in my garden. They look like tiny grasshoppers and can be hard to spot. I finally had to break down and use the liquid Sevin. It worked!

Uh oh! I've looked everywhere today and I can't find this guy (or gal) anywhere, nor anymore. I'm assuming this is an adult, since it was about 2 inches long. I'll look up teh nymphs and see what they look like so I can watch for them.

Thanks!

Joan
