Musical Mosaic did a double..Anyone ever see that before?
Blooming July 8
Closer look of the unknown just above..I thought it only had a pistal and no stamen, but on closer look and after 4 years trying to ID this DL, I saw this for the first time, Unbelievable!! The stamen are growing in the petals in the middle on the edge of the petals...they are part of the petal..If anyone has an explanation, please...please tell me if more DL do that. I hope this pic shows it.
Daylily4201, You have a petalid style double there, though not very double. As I understand it, a petaloid is an adaptation of the stamen into extra "petal material". Actually most doubles are formed this way, and not hose-in-hose style.
They are beautiful but it can be very difficult/impossible to obtain pollen from them as the anthers are fused into the petaloid. Many of David K's Truffle series are like that and especially his extra frilly doubles like Norma Desmond. I've had to tear the petaloid out and take the whole thing with me to be able to take any pollen. It's kind of like the image one gets when bending over and backwards to get a picture without one's hand in it. You really have to wiggle the petaloid around to get the pollen to the anther!
Hope this helps,
Leslie
Is that the same delicious purple with white edges you posted before? It is so beautiful. Haven't gotten it out of my mind.
Thats all for now..
David, they are gorgeous!
