CLOSED: What are these odd things on my Elderberry tree?

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

These worms remind me of the little character worm on
the movie "A Bug's Life".

Hubby was just walking around spraying things when
he noticed not one, but five of these things clinging to,
or munching on, our Elderberry tree.

Could anyone identify these things? I moved one with
a leaf, then it responded by getting my thumb wet. My
son had to aggitate by saying it sprayed venom on me.

(eeeek!)

Many thanks for any ideas you may have.

Wuvie- Don't kill the caterpillers- they will spin a good size cocoon and later hatch into a fantastic moth. Cecropias are like 6-8 inckes across the wings and are really neat. They are one of the good guys

Man, does he look like a plastic toy or what?!!
~'spin!~

I just had to come back to learn more about your little friends there! What a cool looking larva/moth! (Also has me thinking of Silence of the Lambs just a tad, though)

Aren't you the lucky one to find such a fantastic moth larva. Good luck on future ones. I'll have to check on my Elderberry to see if I'm lucky, too.

interesting creature!

When I was about ten, my dad lived in Iowa. I found huge caterpillars that looked like that and was thrilled to death with them. They looked like big rubber toys and I found all those nubby things so interesting. My father gave me some speech about the corn farmers hating them and said they sure are not impressed with them. LOL

wow what a lucky find!!!!

Just an update, we cannot seem to find these guys now. I wonder
if a bird made off with them for lunch?

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

keep looking Wuvie. Should be a cocoon somewhere or maybe it makes a casing and burrows under leaf litter like many moths do

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

Cecropias build silk cocoons lengthwise along a twig of its food plant. They overwinter there. Look closely - it's brown, like the twig.
