Buddleia in zone 5

St. Louis, MO(Zone 5b)

Is there anyway to keep a buddleia from dying all the way back to the ground, maybe with a lot of mulch?

I ask based on this thread http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/617593/ where they discuss making a treelike (standard) shaped buddleia like this one http://www.gardengatemagazine.com/extras/46buddlejastandard.php The one in the picture is a weeping one. I saw a couple non-weeping ones in a local nursery this weekend that were about 5 feet tall and they were grown in the tree shape. The guy there said they were grown in Oklahoma though.

Does anyone in this region have any tips on getting a treelike buddleia in zone 5 or colder?

Thanks,

Maureen

I live in zone 5 in cental IL. and I have several colors of the butterflybush. All of them die down in the winter and I cut off dead stalks in Spring. I have never heard of making a tree out of one except with a wisteria.

Me either. I'm thinking those trees they were selling from Oklahoma will die back to the ground too without some special treatment.

I have a bbush growing in a pot that didn't die quite all the way down to the ground. Last winter when it got really cold, I was concerned about the roots in the pot not being insulated enough so I wrapped a blanket around it.

This year I'm going to overwinter it in the garage where it can stay dormant but not get as cold as outside, and see if dies back even less.
