Public gardens in Boston?

Wichita, KS(Zone 6a)

My family and I are going to Boston next week. Never been! Are there any must see public gardens? We are staying in the Burlington area(NW of downtown Boston). I would love to add a few to our list of outings, small or large, any garden would be great. Any suggestion?

Hi,

This might not be a great deal of help, but THE Boston Public Garden is right smack dab in the middle of town next to the Common. The other place I've heard a lot about is the Arboretum http://www.hartford-hwp.com/archives/43b/035.html

As is often the case, even though I live only about an hour's travel from Boston, I've never been to the Arboretum and haven't seen the other area in many, many years. Sorry, that's the best I can do!

Upton, MA(Zone 5b)

The Arnold Arboretum is gorgeous this time of year, (http://arboretum.harvard.edu/) as is the Public Garden in Boston. If you want to look at some gardens outside of but still close to Boston check out the Lyman Estates on the Waltham/Belmont line - they were featured on Victory Garden and specialize in orchids. website is: http://www.waltham-community.org/Lyman.html

There's also the Butterfly Place http://www.butterflyplace-ma.com/index.html that's great for kids but maybe a little out of your way.

Also outside of Boston but worth the ride is the Garden in the Woods http://www.newfs.org/garden.htm in Framingham.

This is a good website with a list of all the public gardens in and around Boston. http://www.ilovegardens.com/Massachusetts_Gardens/massachusetts_gardens.htm

Hope this helps, have a great trip!

If you're interested in a little local history as well, check out the glass flowers at the museum of natural history at Harvard...unbelieveably beautiful. Let me look for a website...
