I noticed about 5 really large seed pods on a black iris I have. I haven't ever hybridized or even planted iris seeds yet, but I am going to plant these. I think I will plant them in a pot right next to the mama this fall, so I can remember what it is. I will sink the pot in the ground, and transplant if/when they grow.

Big Seed Pods on Black Iris
Good luck
This is kinda fun to see what you get. Some times not much other time a jewel in a nest of rocks.
Have fun

This is my first year for Iris, and I have 2 large seed pods on one of the ones that bloomed. I know to wait for them to turn brown and start to crack open, but then what do I do with the seeds? Thanks, Karen (aka liebran)
liebran, I have never done this before, but I was just reading a book that said to plant them outdoors in the fall, but not so early that they start to sprout. Protect them from animals, and they should begin to sprout in the spring. It also said that iris seeds are programmed to sprout at different times - not all will sprout the first year. They are known to last as much as 15 years...
